Table of Contents Overview Getting Started Setting Preferences Polling for Messages Managing Messages Tips Troubleshooting Deleting Messaging Enabler Overview What is Messaging Enabler? Messaging Enabler is a system extension for the Newton 2.x Operating System that provides the foundation for using paging and messaging devices with the Newton platform. To use the Messaging Enabler, you will need to install a message module. A message module is an extension of the Messaging Enabler that provides the communication level functionality for a specific messaging device. For this setup you will need the Messaging Enabler package, the Newton Messaging Card Message Module, and the Newton Messaging Card. What messaging devices can be used with Messaging Enabler? The messaging device must have an external port to communicate with the Newton device. The various types include: PC card, serial connector with appropriate cable, or infrared (IR) port. Messaging Enabler supports one-way paging devices that only receive messages as well as two-way messaging devices that can send and receive. Can I use more than one messaging device? Messaging enabler can support more than one messaging device at the same time. Getting Started 1. Install the Messaging Enabler on the internal store only. You should not install it on a storage card. If you have a storage card inserted, open the Extras drawer, tap the Card icon, and ensure that the checkbox for "store information and packages on card" is unchecked. It is a good idea not to move the Enabler, but to keep it on the internal store 2. Install the Newton Messaging Card Message Module package (MM_Moto.pkg). For details on how to install a package refer to Newton 2.0 Handbook. 3. Insert the Newton Messaging Card in the Newton's card slot and lock the card in. Messaging Enabler automatically recognizes the card as the Newton Messaging Card, establishes a connection, sets preferences, and polls the device for messages to download. There should be a glowing star icon at the top of the screen. The function of this icon will be explained later. Messaging Enabler is fully integrated with the operating system. All the management of messages takes place in the Inbox. From the Inbox, you can check for messages, view and manage the messages you have received, and set preferences. Setting Preferences Messaging Enabler provides a set of general user settings. In addition, the Newton Messaging Card Message Module provides a unique set of user controllable preferences. To open the general preferences screen: 1. From the Extras drawer, open the Inbox. 2. Tap the information button (i) in the lower left corner of the screen. 3. In the pop-up list select "Messaging Prefs" Show Status Slips checkbox: Select this option if want to see the status of communications with the messaging device on the Newton screen when you manually poll for messages. Status slips are supressed, regardless, when the Newton is automatically polling. The default for this option is On. Get Messages: Set this option if you want the Newton device to automatically poll your messaging device at certain frequencies for new messages. At the bottom, there is also an option to poll for messages every time the Newton device is powered on. The default for this option is "At Power On." Notify: This option controls whether you see a message window over any application you are working with when new messages have been downloaded to the Inbox. The default for this option is On. File Read Items In: Selecting this option lets you chose which folder a message is placed in when it has been read. The default for this option is to file in "Unfiled items". In order to see the effects of changes you make to this option, close the Inbox and reopen it from the Extras drawer. Information button (i): Tap this button for version information about the Messaging Enabler and general help. Also listed are about screens for the loaded message modules. When the Messaging Card is inserted its about screen contains dynamic information on the number of messages and the amount of available memory on the pager. Font button: This screen sets the display font for all messages. You select the font, size, and style. Device button: Tap this button, then Messaging Card to see the device settings of the Messaging Card. You will find options for clock and sound on the resulting screen. These features will be covered next. Sound: This option sets whether the pager beeps or not. Clock: There are two options: "Set Newton from Pager" or "Set Pager from Newton". One uses the pager's internal clock to update the time and date on the Newton, the other sets the pager's date and time according to the Newton, respectively. This function is performed everytime the pager is inserted into the Newton device and a connection is first established. This does not occur everytime the unit is polled for messages. Polling for Messages In order for Messaging Enabler to be able to automatically poll for messages according to the user settings for Get Messages, there must be an open connection with the messaging device. Everything occurs automatically when the Messaging Card is locked into the card slot. A connection is automatically established, preferences are set, and any new messages are automatically downloaded. At this point, Messaging Enabler will check for messages at the frequency you have set in the preferences screen. Manually Polling for Messages If you want to check for messages: 1. Ensure the card is locked in. 2. Open the Inbox. 3. Tap the Receive button. 4. From the list that appears, select Messaging Card. What does the glowing star icon mean? The glowing star icon is a user alert as mentioned in the Newton Handbook. In the case of the Messaging Enabler, the icon gives you quick access to connections with the messaging devices and to the Inbox when new messages have been downloaded. When you establish a connection with a messaging device, an icon appears at the top of the screen. Tapping the icon reveals a list of alert items. You can select Messaging Card to see its alert screen. This screen allows you to close the connection with the card or to cancel. When the Newton is set to automatically poll for messages at a certain frequency and a new message has been downloaded, the Inbox will appear in the glowing star's list. This occurs regardless of your user setting for Notify. You can immediately go to the inbox and see your new messages just by selecting Inbox from the glowing star. Managing Messages All management of messages is done in the Inbox. Messages are handled in the Inbox much like any other item. You can duplicate, delete, log, and file messages. You can even route them to other transports like print, fax, beam, or mail. You can put away messages to the notepad or any other application that is registered to putaway message items. For more information on how to handle items in the I/O Box please refer to your Newton Handbook or look at the online help on the Newton PDA. To view this, open the Inbox and tap the information button in the lower left corner, selecting Help from the list. This will take you to the appropriate section of the file. Tips ¥ To speed up the process, close the Inbox when downloading messages. This avoids the inbox having to keep updating its list and instead the messages go directly to the storage file. ¥ Setting the Get Messages option to "At Power On" simplifies polling for messages. Just by switching on your Newton PDA it automatically checks for messages. Troubleshooting ¥ Low battery on the Newton Messaging Card causes the card not to be recognized by the Newton. Replace with a fresh battery to resolve the problem. ¥ If you use an external modem with your Newton: 1. Open the Extras Drawer. 2. Tap on Prefs. 3. Select Modem from the Preferences screen. 4. Tap on the Connect using option. 5. Ensure that "Serial Port" is selected. This ensures that the Messaging Card will not be confused with the modem. Deleting Messaging Enabler 1. Open the Extras drawer. 2. Select the Extensions folder. 3. Delete "Messaging Card". This is the Newton Messaging Card message module. 4. Delete "Messaging". This is the Messaging Enabler extension. 5. Be careful not to remove the Text Stationary extension unless you are sure other applications are not using it. If there are any message items in the Inbox, the icon for those items will be replaced by a "Missing Service" icon. The items will remain completely intact and viewable only if the Text Stationary extension is in the Extras drawer.
