Clarity 1.0 Install Notes 8/23/1998 For users upgrading from Clarity 1.0: To upgrade from Clarity 1.0 to 1.01, perform the following steps: ¥ Open the extras drawer on your Newton 2000/2100 or eMate. ¥ Locate the Clarity icon. Select this icon. ¥ Choose "Delete" from the routing menu. Click "OK" on the confirmation slip to delete Clarity 1.0 ¥ Load the Clarity 1.01 package. ¥ See the end of this document for a list of changes from Clarity 1.0 to 1.01. Note: If you are already familiar with installing software on your Newton MessagePad or eMate, you already know how to install Clarity. Install it like any other Newton Package file. If you do not know how to install software on your Newton device, read on. To Install Clarity from your Macintosh, you will need to have the following: ¥ A 2.1 Newton Device (eMate or MessagePad 2000/2100) with at least 520 K free on the internal store or on a card. ¥ A serial cable to connect your Macintosh to your Newton. ¥ The Newton MessagePad 2000/2100 requires a Newton Interconnect adapter as well which was included when you bought your MessagePad (not required for the eMate). ¥ A Macintosh application program capable of installing software packages on your Newton such as Newton Connection Utilities, Newton Backup Utilities, Newton Package Installer, or X-Port. All of these except X-Port (an ICS product) are available free from Apple and were likely to have been included when you bought your MessagePad. ¥ The AppleTalk ADSP Tool extension is required to be in the Extensions folder of your Macintosh's System Folder at startup in order to connect your Newton via AppleTalk (this would have been done automatically if you ran the installer for Newton Connection Utilities or Newton Backup Utilities). ¥ The Serial Tool extension is required to be in the Extensions folder of your Macintosh's System Folder at startup in order to connect your Newton via Serial (this would have been done automatically if you ran the installer for Newton Connection Utilities or Newton Backup Utilities). To Install Clarity: 1. Launch the application program you are planning to use to install Clarity. 2. Choose the connection type on your Macintosh. This is usually made via the preferences for the particular application you are using. You will choose either serial or Appletalk. If you choose serial, you will usually have to specify which port (modem or printer) you wish to use to connect to your Newton. 3. If you choose AppleTalk to connect with the Newton, make sure it is active and make a note of which port you are running AppleTalk through (serial or printer). 4. Connect your Newton 2.1 device to your Macintosh with the cable. If you don't have the cable that came with your Newton, most any printer/local talk cable will work. 5. If you are installing to a PC Card on your Newton, tap the Card icon in the Extras drawer and then check the box that is labeled "Save new info and packages on this card". If you want to install Clarity internally on the device, leave this unchecked. 6. Locate the Dock app on your Newton. On the eMate, it is located in the extras drawer. On the Newton 2000/2100 it may be either in the extras drawer or on the button bar. Launch it. 7. Choose the type of connection on your Newton. You want to choose either Serial or AppleTalk. The Serial - options are for PCs which operate only at particular speed settings. They are not needed to connect to a Macintosh. 8. Choose "Install Package" on your desktop app. You may be prompted for the file. Locate the Clarity package file. Your Macintosh should then begin to look for your Newton. 9. Tap "Connect" on the Newton's Dock app. You should see a progress bar which shows Clarity being loaded. It will normally take 3-7 minutes to load Clarity. Changes in Clarity 1.01: ¥ The spin button editor was modified so that when you select a cell in the evaluation control where no grade has been assigned, the edit appears blank. Previously, its value had been 0. This makes grading somewhat more efficient because you no longer have to scrub the 0 before entering the score. ¥ A bug was fixed in the evaluation tab "spread sheet" control which in some cases prevented the vertical scroll bar from appearing when needed. ¥ A box was added around the category entryline in the "Edit Categories" screen which makes it easier to enter text onto this line. ¥ A bug was fixed in the preferences screen which under some circumstances caused the signature not to appear in printed reports. If you have experienced this bug in the past, open the preferences screen, then close it to solve the problem. ¥ Several internal changes were make to the Student Profile report which fix problems which occasionally occurred. Sliders which have labels are now treated as both numeric and non-numeric grades (i.e. they are figured into the average AND show up under the listing of non-numeric grades). There was an intermittent problem which caused some or all of the non-numeric grades to fail to show up in this report. It is believed to be fixed at this time. ¥ On MessagePad 2000/2100s, Clarity no longer installs into the button bar.
